For a long time people have asked what or who is the enemy but the Book of the war say the who is unimportant and instead we should look to the Why. So why are the Enemy at War with the Great Houses? this is the purpose of this thread to first collect everything we know about what the Enemy wants and everything they may want. And then to discover from these nuggets of facts the reason for the war.
In the Book of the War it is stated that the Enemy are not primarily motivated by self preservation. the Riviera Manuscript Renegade asks “why does it hate us?” (Of course the It could be the Great Houses should the Renegade be affiliated with the Enemy). the Enemy send the Shift to purchase the Doctor’s Body in Alien Bodies suggesting that they have a need for it. the Enemy may or many not have sent a creature to hunt Down the 13 Renegades in Warlords of Utopia (or their time rings). please feel free to add anything you know about the Enemy’s motivations or just anything we know about them. To compile all information in one place may allow us to observe the shape of the Enemy and their motivation.

The fact that the Enemy even exist means that either they're beyond the Great Houses' control over history or the Great Houses aren't as omnipotent as they believe.

The motivation of the enemy of the Great Houses is to bring down the reign of the Great Houses. Different groups within The Enemy have slightly different ways of doing this.
I think Aristide could offer some more detailed insight...

The Enemy exists because there is always an Enemy, because there is no right in power, only righteousness, and chaos only exists if there is an order for it to fight.
