Welcome to the first week of the Obverse Marathon which will hopefully take us all the way up to October (and the start of more Doctor Who the following month!). It was supposed to come live on Monday 9th but time had other plans, hopefully the other installments will come regularly Monday/Friday. The first installment is Storyteller by Matt Kimpton from the Obverse anthology A Romance in Twelve Parts. Synopsis take from Tardis Wikia: A young bard, Drostan, is determined to turn his life into a legendary tale, but his hunt to do so changes his own story in strange and terrible ways...
Discussion points - - Who was the Blood Witch?
- What was Drostan's true fate?
- Could the witchcraft and power of words seen here relate to the Carrionites from Doctor Who?

By coincidence I managed to read Romance back in November, so these stories are relatively fresh in my mind. Though I admit the sheer number and often abstract nature of these tales often means distinct details slide off my mind. I do remember this story quite well for the evocative setting. It's one of those very orthogonal FP stories, where nothing actually directly ties back to the wider mythos, but it so delightfully 'weird' in the same kind of way, touching on themes about the reasons behind any particular bit of storytelling.
If I had to take a stab at the Blood Witch's identity, she strikes me as similar one of the Time Ships, perhaps rogue or working for some malign purpose. Nothing too easy to pin down, but it's always fun to speculate.

Nothing too easy to pin down, but it's always fun to speculate. As far as I can tell the only connection between this story and the FP mythos as a whole is the Witch's bone mask and her preferred weapon of choice being a dagger. An interesting way to start the first Obverse FP anthology, but I think that it totally succeeds in being standalone and accessible to people new to the lore (which I believe most FP material is designed to be). This was one of the first FP heavy stories I ever read and, despite not being as well versed as I am now, I was spurred on to read the other entries and really became hooked in that universe. Your speculation about the Witch and the time ships is interesting, and has me looking through the established ships from the FP back catalogue for a culprit. We know that at some point she died and was resurrected in the City of the Saved, so if this were the case she must be part-timeship part-human. I think it would be interesting if the timeship was actually Lover, who made her debut in the same anthology a couple of stories later, and after her self-destruction she became a concept/story that was kept alive by the stories her and Bow's son thought up about her. She bled into this reality using the power those stories gave her and ultimately managed to overpower Drostan to gain true entry back into the universe - this time without Bow's control.
