Perhaps a somewhat random way to inaugurate this channel, but I enjoy keeping up with Scott Sanford's Jenny Everywhere stories, and (one of) the latest had a passage sure to be of interest to our sorts…
“The first time for what?”, Kim asked.
“No, no, no. The first time. When the universe started…”
Kim and David traded looks. I could see they didn’t understand, but this was a story millions of me had kept for a very long time.
“It was good, in the beginning. We played, we learned, we explored… But it didn’t last forever. We found places we couldn’t go. The universe was shrinking.”
“What was going on?”
“Time! Time was going on. There were times that weren’t now but then, that we couldn’t get to. Space, too. We had only had here but things kept slipping out into there. It was the end of the universe.”
“Wait… When was this?”
“At the very beginning. Too little time to measure, by a clock. But that’s not the point; we had had all the time that had ever been! And all the space too; everything that had ever been was right there! And everyone was there, everyone who had ever lived. And then… it wasn’t. There was growing ‘past’ that kept cutting off parts of ‘now.’
“Huh,” I grunted, feeling both thoughtful and puzzled. “There are still parts of me that think there should be a better way, but I can’t remember what it is.”
“A better way than what?”, David asked.
“This, with the universe split up into here and there, and now and then. I know there are other ways to build a universe but I can’t tell you what they are. They don’t fit into a human mind.”
