I once met a woman not of my kind dressed in animal skins, she told me something which at the time I passed off the ravings of a savage. I let my prejudices get in the way of my understanding and in the end it may cost me my life. What she told me was in response to me claiming that we have no History as we made it. She told me this;
“The clock is a circle because history will repeat itself and you having made the clock thus set yourself into a cycle of war and death.”
I ignored it. I did not need the warning. “War? We would never face another war, yes a little skirmish at a push but never a war, anyway we’ve only ever had one war.” I told myself. Little did I know how wrong I was. I have seen the rise of the Faction Paradox. The first message from the “enemy” whoever they may be. The Suiced of Umbaste and now a leader calling himself the War King.
And now once more we face war. The diplomat, a Renegade, who tried to avert the war has died. And now all chance diplomacy is lost. War will be declared soon, I know it. Only 31 years ago it was unthinkable. And now two presidents are dead. And InCorporate, the legitimate face of our enemy, is amassing its forces on Dronid. I have been sent there along with most of the Guard and the Watch.
The Clock has almost completed its rotations. It is one bell to midnight.
I don’t even know who I am fighting or why I am fighting, I wonder if my equivalents on the other side know? I wonder if the rank and file of our opponent knows who they face? I wonder if they care? For that matter do I? Was I not grown to be a guard? I was made to fight? Or was it made to protect? Is there even a difference?
I am here awaiting the first shot. The first death.
It is midnight.
The First day of a War in Heaven.
