I see Faction Paradox fans discuss it sometimes, so I thought I'd create a thread here to discuss shows that are similar in some way to how you imagine a Faction Paradox TV show and/or film would be.
The classic examples for each medium that you usually see are, of course, Twin Peaks and Amadeus (but with monsters), respectively, but I haven't seen either of these so I find myself unable to comment.
Personally, I've just recently finished the first season of the 2003 HBO drama Carnivàle and I think it fits the bill pretty well. Like Faction Paradox often does, it takes place in a historical setting with supernatural elements that give it an aesthetic in common with magical realism. It presents a world where strange and supernatural dramas are, and always have been, playing out just behind human history, influencing and being influenced by it. I'm being pretty vague here but that's deliberate - I think anyone who enjoys Faction Paradox would probably also enjoy Carnivàle, and I highly encourage you to watch it for yourself.
In terms of films (although it's almost cheating seeing as it's referenced in The Book of the War) I think the film The Falls is a solid example. It's an alphabetic overview of a series of survivors of an event termed the 'Violent Unknown Event' and it's weird in almost the exact same way FP is weird. I think the biggest thing is that The Falls feels like in a certain sense it's about history, which I think is one of the defining characteristics of Faction Paradox as a series.
I'd love to hear other people's thoughts on this matter.
