In contrast, I don't think I am breaking any oaths of secrecy by pointing out that any Hypothetical New Production Company crafting a Hypothetical New Fully-Fledged FP Audio Series would be keen to present its creations as a brand-new jumping-off point, requiring no prior knowledge of the series; especially not background knowledge of the Protocols, so long as those can only be officially purchased from — well — BBV. It’s unfortunate, really, because the Protocols are wonderful. However, I’ve always felt that Magic Bullet handled things really well when they took over the series. There was just enough fan service to satisfy long-term listeners (i.e. a mention of the Earl of Sandwich and very oblique references to the events of Sabbath Dei and The Year of the Cat), but basically they were completely new entities (despite having the same protagonists and, ultimately, the same antagonist). The inclusion of Sutekh and the Osirian Court was brilliant, and did so much for the series; rather than overshadow the Faction Paradox storyline, it not only complemented it, it actually enhanced it, particularly with the Osirian Court being defined as “basically one of the Great Houses” - just from a different Homeworld. Anyways, my point is that a new audio series could totally make use of previously used characters, and STILL be presented as a “brand-new-jumping-off point”, with very little prior knowledge required. Now all we need is Lawrence Miles’ involvement! (Yes, I know - “ain’t gonna happen!”) Still…

Guess I'll finally be getting Cwej: Down the Middle on the 21st, I always meant to get around to it but got distracted by various other books. I now own it, it's bigger than I expected.

Is Cwej Down the Middle actually worth reading? I bought it years ago but I gave up most of the way through the first story and haven't read any further. Previously in Dead Romance Chris did some pretty messed up stuff but for what he thought were important big picture reasons and the book was well written. But in the first story of Down the Middle Cwej meets a couple of parallel universe aliens causing mass death and genocide on a parallel planet Earth for the fun of killing people and his reaction rather than to stop them is to try and become friends with them. Seriously? I know he's had his mind fiddled with but this seems messed up and so far from the old character that it put me off reading any further.

I'd call it worth reading as there are plenty of fascinating ideas and stories in there and Larles and Kwol aren't always around.

Seriously? I know he's had his mind fiddled with but this seems messed up and so far from the old character that it put me off reading any further. … His first reaction was to stop them. He went to their dinky ship to stop them from killing anyone else. Then his second reaction was to have them save what was left of the alternate human race. Once they did all that, once they spent two years proving themselves, his third reaction was to befriend them.
I don’t think it’s entirely fair to judge Chris’ characterization based on him befriending and seeing himself in fellow alternate-Earth-destroyers, and basically twisting their arm till they save everyone they otherwise could have let die.
I’m biased, obviously, but I’d recommend giving it another try.
